- Arthur abandoned his family shortly after John was born (1916). John remembered approaching his father and asking him for money to support the family. The response was "so you are little Johnny?" - but there was no money forthcoming. He was also charged with wife desertion in June 1910.

- Jack was closer to his mother's side of the family than his father's side, probably a result of his parents splitting up shortly after Jack was born. During WWII, Jack was briefly stationed at Bathurst, and remembers going to visit his father's relatives (probably William Kelly), but he got the cold shoulder..
