Harry Kelly was killed in Corbie (about 3 miles north of Villers-Bretonneux) during a conflict known as the First Battle of Villers-Bretonneux.
With the collapse of Russia in October 1917, a major German offensive on the Western Front was expected in early 1918. This came in late March and the 5th Division moved to defend the sector around Corbie. The 14th Brigade took up positions to the north of Villers-Bretonneux and held these even when the village fell, threatening their flanks | Kelly, Harry (I158)

He went to school in Tambaroora until his mother's death on 12.05.1872. Then he went to live with his oldest brother, John Hurley, and family, at Liverpool in Sydney. His (and Archer's also?) share of the large family estate was managed by John. Fred became a boarder at Newington College.
After he left Newington, Fred sat for his Public Service exams and joined the Postal Service on 28.04.1878. He was sent to Forbes in 1880 as a postal assistant.

Hello John,
I'm wondering if your information can go back further. My Critchleys hailed from Wheelton, Lancashire. My great-great-great grandfather was William Critchley. He was born between 1772 and 1785. He married a Catherine Murphy and ended up in Australia via the 48th Northumberland Regiment. Catherine was from Ireland. I would love more to find out more about him. | Critchley, William C (I361)

Jack was closer to his mother's side of the family than his father's side, probably a result of his parents splitting up shortly after Jack was born. During WWII, Jack was briefly stationed at Bathurst, and remembers going to visit his father's relatives (probably William Kelly), but he got the cold shoulder.. | Kelly, John Kevin (I4)

James Ashton (1861-1918) and Frederick Ashton (1866-1941), circus proprietors, were sons of James Henry Ashton and his second wife Elizabeth, n?e Critchley. Their father, whose real name may have been Wild, was reputedly a clog-dancer and circus performer from Colchester, Essex, England, who had arrived in Australia in the 1840s. After success as a 'bold and fearless' equestrian at Radford's Amphitheatre, Hobart Town, in 1848-49 and at Port Phillip, he performed at John Malcolm's Amphitheatre, Sydney, in September 1851 and later at J. S. Noble's Olympic Circus. His first wife Mary died aged 19 at Maitland in 1852, and next year at Hanging Rock, near Tamworth, he married Elizabeth Critchley. By May 1854 he had formed Ashton's Royal Olympic Circus and for the next thirty-five years he toured eastern Australia with his variously grandly titled circus. He was in South Australia in 1865, but his name became a household word especially in the country areas of New South Wales and in Queensland as far north as Rockhampton. He acquired a reputation for developing Australian talent: the Wirth family joined his troupe for a time, and he often featured Aboriginal performers such as the acrobatic rider Mungo Mungo. | Ashton, James Henry (I565)

MONEY, JOHN (1752-1817), aeronaut and general, born in 1752, began his military career in the Norfolk militia, but entering the army became cornet in the 6th Inniskilling dragoons 11 March 1762, captain in the 9th foot 10 Feb. 1770, major 28 Sept. 1781. He went on half-pay in 1784, and never rejoined the active list, but was made lieutenant-colonel by brevet 18 Nov. 1790, colonel 21 Aug. 1795, major-general 18 June 1798, lieutenant-general 30 Oct. 1805, and general 4 June 1814. Money saw a good deal of active service. He was present at the battle of Vellinghausen in 1761 and in various skirmishes with Elliot's light dragoons. He served in Canada in 1777 in General Burgoyne's disastrous descent on Albany from the north, and was present at several engagements. He was taken prisoner in September, and does not appear to have been released till the end of the war.
Money was one of the earliest English aeronauts, making two ascents in 1785, that is, within two years of Montgolfier's first aerial voyage [cf. Lunardi, Vincenzo]. On 22 July in that year he made an ascent from Norwich; an 'improper current' took him out to sea, and then, dipping into the water, he 'remained for seven hours struggling with his fate,' till rescued in a small boat. In 'A Treatise on the Use of Balloons and Field Observators' (1803) he advocated the use of balloons for military purposes (Royal Engineer Corps Papers, 1863).
Money offered his services to the rebel party in the Austrian Netherlands in 1790, when, after experiencing some successes, their prospects were growing critical. After a first refusal his offer was accepted. He was given a commission as major-general, and was placed in command of a force of about four or five thousand men at Tirlemont. His troops were half-hearted, and in the end, after one sharp engagement, he had to join in the general retreat on Brussels, a retreat which ended the rebellion. He utilised his knowledge of the country in his 'History of the Campaign of 1792,' 1794, 8vo. He died at Trowse Hall, Norfolk, 26 March 1817. | Money, General John (I363)
